Laura and Steve got married at the Boston Public Library on September 15, 2025.

They had one hour. They spent most of it reading love letters to each other.

In This Post: How to Plan Your Own BPL Wedding

  • Laura and Steve's day, from the walk over to a picnic on the Esplanade

  • How hard it is to book a BPL wedding, and when the next window opens

  • The library's rules on photos, guests and decor

  • A sample timeline and FAQ

  • Time: 1 hour for the ceremony and photos

Their One-Hour Boston Public Library Wedding

Their slot was 11:45 to 12:45 on a Monday.

They walked over from home, already dressed. The library has no getting-ready room, so this matters.

We took portraits on the way, by the brownstones and outside the McKim Building, before the hour started.

Then their family and closest friends took their seats.

Two Love Letters

After the officiant spoke, Steve read his letter. Then Laura read hers.

They talked about how they met, the small things from their years together, the jokes only the two of them get.

They started out laughing. By the end, both of them were crying.

Rings. A kiss. Applause from the people who matter most.

Planning a Boston Public Library wedding? We already know how to make one hour count.

The Hour Ended. Their Photos Didn't.

The library gives you one hour. Your photographer doesn't have to leave when it ends.

Laura and Steve booked four hours with us. After the ceremony, more friends joined them for a picnic at Fiedler Dock on the Charles River Esplanade, with cake, a dance on the grass and a walk along the water.

Every couple plans this part differently, so we build each package around your day:

  • Before: getting ready at home or at our Malden studio

  • During: the ceremony and portraits at the library

  • After: a picnic, a walk through Back Bay or the Public Garden, or dinner with family

How Hard Is It to Book a BPL Wedding? Very.

This is the part most couples don't expect.

  • It's a lottery, not first come, first served. BPL opens applications three months before each set of dates.

  • The window is short. The next one, for February 2027 dates, opens 8:00 to 10:00 am on Monday, November 2, 2026.

  • The draw is random. BPL doesn't review applications before 10:00 am, then picks at random.

  • Applying isn't booking. A submitted application doesn't guarantee a date. October 2026 through January 2027 is already full.

What to do:

  • Mark the opening date three months before the season you want.

  • Apply the morning the window opens.

  • Stay flexible on the date and keep a backup. The Public Garden is close by.

  • Don't book flights or dinner until your slot is confirmed.

Check the BPL one-hour wedding page for the current window. Details change by season. Last checked October 2026.

Boston Public Library Wedding Rules

  • Photos: allowed in the ceremony room, outside the McKim Building and in Copley Square. Not anywhere else inside, including the courtyard.

  • Vendors: one officiant and one photographer only.

  • Decor: no extra decorations, petals, signs, confetti, props or animals.

  • Also no: food, drinks or live music.

  • No prep room: come dressed and ready.

  • Bring your own: officiant and Massachusetts marriage license. There is a 3-day waiting period after you apply for the license.

A Sample Timeline for a 1-Hour BPL Wedding

  • 11:15: walk to the library

  • 11:30: portraits outside the McKim Building and in Copley Square

  • 11:45: guests seated

  • 12:00: ceremony, letters, rings, kiss

  • 12:30: portraits in the ceremony room

  • 1:00 to 3:15: picnic and photos on the Esplanade

Tip: take your outdoor portraits before your hour starts. The hour inside goes fast.
